Scientific Rescue Shines in the Ancient Land, Lighting up Hope Amid the Ruins

Jul.05.2025

Cairo, Egypt  |  June 14, 2025

Five survivors were pulled alive from the rubble on June 14, 2025, after a residential building collapsed in Garden City, Cairo, as the city’s Civil Defense Department deployed a three-phase structural-collapse rescue package developed in China. The system combines structural monitoring radar, radar and seismic life detectors, and a search-and-rescue camera, and it had been delivered to Cairo Civil Defense Headquarters two months before the accident.

The Cairo Rescue Operation at a Glance

The Garden City response was a one-day, three-phase operation — secure the structure, locate the living, then reach the confirmed positions — and five survivors came out alive on the day of the collapse.

LSJ Building Collapse Rescue Solution equipment lineup: structural deformation monitoring radar and dual laser displacement monitor, array microseismic and radar life detectors, and rod-type and box-type audio-video life detectors

The LSJ Building Collapse Rescue Solution toolkit: structural stability monitoring (top), array microseismic and radar life detection (middle), and rod- or box-type audio-video search through narrow voids (bottom).

Phase 1 — Structural Monitoring Stays Ahead of Secondary Collapse

Before any rescuer entered the collapse zone, two LSJ instruments watched the damaged structure around the clock and were set to halt the operation the moment it moved.

Crews deployed the Building Deformation and Displacement Monitoring Radar (HXDMR-300) together with the Dual Laser Structural Movement Telemeter (YZ-120Pro), aiming them at beams, support columns and load-bearing walls. The HXDMR-300 records structural deformation to an accuracy better than 0.1 millimetre at update rates above 200 Hz; the YZ-120Pro links two laser heads wirelessly across 100 metres, so two faces of an unstable building can be watched simultaneously for three-dimensional movement.

The moment readings crossed the alarm threshold, sound-and-light warnings triggered and teams withdrew. Continuous monitoring kept the site controllable and, critically, prevented secondary collapses from burying rescue personnel.

Phase 2 — UWB Radar Searches the Golden 72 Hours

Within the golden 72-hour survival window, the LSJ-M radar life detector read breathing and heartbeat through the debris without touching it, telling commanders how many people were trapped and in what condition.

The Radar Life Detector (LSJ-M) transmits ultra-wideband (UWB) electromagnetic pulses that penetrate rubble and return the micro-movements of respiration and pulse. Working from up to 30 metres away with no contact, no transponder and no camera, it returns two-dimensional coordinates of living targets in real time. On June 14, those readings let commanders concentrate hands and tools on verified locations while the survival window was still open.

Phase 3 — Seismic Triangulation Fixes the Point, a Camera Confirms It

The CRMB-RAD array seismic life detector pinpointed where survivors lay, and the LSJ-C-E rod camera put eyes on them through gaps no rescuer could pass.

The Array Seismic Life Detector (CRMB-RAD) connects an array of 6, 8 or 10 seismic probes and applies filtration, triangulation and axis cross-checking to taps, shouts and vibration signals under the debris. Once a position was fixed, the Rod Type Search and Rescue Camera (LSJ-C-E) was pushed through narrow voids to stream live video from beneath the slab. The two instruments turned a broad search area into a confirmed target, so excavation followed evidence rather than guesswork.

Key Fact

The complete solution was delivered to Cairo Civil Defense Headquarters two months before the Garden City collapse. On June 14, 2025, it was already on site, powered on, and operated by crews trained on it — and five survivors were rescued that day.

The Equipment Behind the Cairo Rescue

Four LSJ instruments, each matched to one stage of a structural-collapse rescue, made up the Cairo deployment.

Phase Equipment Model Role in Cairo
1 Building Deformation & Displacement Monitoring Radar HXDMR-300 Sub-0.1 mm deformation tracking at >200 Hz; secondary-collapse early warning
1 Dual Laser Structural Movement Telemeter YZ-120Pro Two wireless laser heads over 100 m; simultaneous 3D monitoring of two building faces
2 UWB Radar Life Detector LSJ-M Contact-free breathing and heartbeat detection through rubble, up to 30 m, with 2D coordinates
3 Array Seismic Life Detector CRMB-RAD 6/8/10 seismic probes; triangulation of taps and vibration to a precise point
3 Rod Type Search & Rescue Camera LSJ-C-E Live video through narrow voids to visually confirm trapped survivors

A Two-Month-Old Delivery, Tested in a Real Collapse

The equipment that helped rescue five people in Garden City was not flown in after the disaster — it had been delivered, commissioned and trained on two months earlier.

The package was independently developed by Beijing LSJ Technology Development Co., Ltd., a Chinese national high-tech enterprise that has developed and manufactured urban search-and-rescue and firefighting equipment since 2013. LSJ engineers commissioned the system at Cairo Civil Defense Headquarters and ran hands-on training with Cairo firefighters. When the emergency call came on June 14, the department fielded its own crews on its own equipment, and the system was used across all three phases of an operation that ended with five survivors brought out the same day.

From Cairo to the Governorates: Egypt’s National Rollout

Egypt plans to extend the same three-phase capability from Cairo to civil defense departments across its provincial governorates.

Under the rollout plan, provincial civil defense departments will receive the same structural monitoring, UWB radar life detection, seismic localization and visual search capability used in Garden City. For LSJ, the operation stands as a field-proven reference for Chinese-developed urban search-and-rescue equipment in an overseas civil-defense fleet — technology measured not in launches or claims, but in the five lives it helped bring home.

Build the Same Three-Phase Collapse-Rescue Capability

Civil defense, fire and urban search-and-rescue teams can specify the same package proven in Garden City:

  • Structural early warning — HXDMR-300 deformation radar and YZ-120Pro dual-laser telemeter
  • Life detection — LSJ-M UWB radar life detector and CRMB-RAD array seismic life detector
  • Visual confirmation — LSJ-C-E rod-type search-and-rescue camera
