Core Capabilities

Wind, Temperature and Pressure Read Where the Crew Is Standing

Twelve meteorological readings in a 108 g handheld unit with a 1.8-inch colour LCD, a 0.3–60 m/s impeller and an IP67 sealed body — so an incident commander reads the microclimate on the fireline instead of a forecast from a station kilometres away.

CAPABILITY 01

Twelve Readings on One 1.8-Inch Screen

Wind speed, wind direction, air temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, compass azimuth, dew point, wet bulb, wind chill, heat stress, density altitude and altitude all come from a single instrument that samples and displays them together. Maximum and minimum values, average wind speed and measurement logs are held onboard, and built-in Bluetooth moves the record to a phone or a report.

  • Twelve parameters from one handheld unit
  • Max/min values, average wind speed and onboard logs
  • Bluetooth transfer for incident reporting
CAPABILITY 02

Fireline Wind: 0.3–60 m/s at ±3%, With a Compass Bearing

Wind speed spans 0.3 to 60 m/s with ±3% accuracy — calm forest air through storm-force gusts. An electronic compass reports wind direction as a 0–360° azimuth, so a shift is read as a bearing rather than estimated by feel, and an external wind vane is available when the meter is used as a fixed station.

  • 0.3–60 m/s range at ±3% accuracy
  • 0–360° electronic compass for wind direction
  • Optional external wind vane for fixed observation

CAPABILITY 03

Environment Readings and the Indices Derived From Them

Air temperature covers −40 to +75 °C (±0.3 °C, 0.1 °C resolution), humidity 0–95 %RH (±2 %RH) and pressure 300–1100 hPa (±0.5 hPa) for storm-trend awareness. From those inputs the meter derives dew point, wet bulb, wind chill, heat stress, density altitude and altitude — the numbers that decide crew exposure and how hard a fire is likely to run.

  • −40 to +75 °C, 0–95 %RH, 300–1100 hPa
  • Dew point and wet bulb for fire-behaviour judgement
  • Wind chill, heat stress and density altitude for crew and aircraft limits
CAPABILITY 04

An IP67 Body That Keeps Reading in Rain, Mud and Dust

The housing is sealed to IP67 — dust-tight and protected against water immersion — and rated to operate from −20 °C to +60 °C. When a user-set temperature threshold is crossed, the meter raises an over-temperature alarm through vibration and screen flashing, so the warning reaches an operator through gloves, noise and smoke.

  • IP67 sealed, dust-tight and waterproof housing
  • Operating range −20 °C to +60 °C
  • Vibration plus screen-flash over-temperature alarm

CAPABILITY 05

108 g, 122 mm, and a Full Shift on One Charge

At 108 g (±10 g) and 122 × 45 × 25 mm (±1 mm) the meter rides in a turnout-coat pocket, and the flip cover seals the impeller between readings. A 3.7 V rechargeable polymer lithium-ion battery delivers ≥8 hours of continuous operation over a Type-C connection, and automatic power-off is adjustable from 1 to 60 minutes.

  • 108 g and 122 mm — pocket carry
  • ≥8 h continuous runtime, Type-C charging
  • 1–60 minute adjustable automatic power-off
CAPABILITY 06

Handheld Patrol, or a Fixed Observation Point With the Field Kit

Standard supply is the meter, adapter, instruction manual and packaging box. For a command post or fire camp, LSJ supplies a field kit that adds the external main wind vane, a tripod and a carry case, converting the same meter into a stationary observation set. State the deployment mode when ordering — the kit is configured to match it.

  • Standard: meter, adapter, manual and box
  • Field kit: external wind vane, tripod and carry case
  • Handheld patrol or fixed observation from one meter

Applications

Where a Handheld Weather Meter Changes a Decision

Specified for wildland fire, flood response, mountain search and rescue, and cold-weather deployment — anywhere a decision on the ground depends on wind, temperature or pressure at that point. The meter measures where the operator stands; it does not forecast and it does not model fire behaviour.

Wind-driven fire running through a conifer stand under heavy smoke

Wildland & Forest Firefighting

Wind shifts reverse firelines in seconds, and temperature and humidity decide how fast a front will run. A 0.3–60 m/s reading with a compass bearing, plus temperature, humidity and wet bulb, supports firebreak planning and the watch for re-ignition.

Rescue boat and crew working through flooded streets

Flood & Water Rescue

Boat operations and storm response face sudden gusts and fast-moving pressure changes. The IP67 sealed body logs wind, pressure and humidity trends in rain and spray, without a crew member leaving the craft to read an instrument ashore.

Snow-covered mountain ridge under a clear sky

Mountain & Wilderness SAR

High elevation brings wind chill, density-altitude effects and rapid disorientation. Altitude, density altitude, wind chill and compass azimuth come from one 108 g unit that can be carried on every ascent rather than split across a pack.

Operational Scenario

Wind Shift on the Fireline: An Illustrative Deployment

The scenario below illustrates how the meter may be used on a fireline. It is not a documented customer case study.

Fire burning through a conifer stand under heavy smoke, the conditions in which a wind reversal is most costly

Example: A Crew Holding a Firebreak When the Wind Turns

Situation

A hand crew is holding a firebreak on a slope. The district forecast calls for light wind, but slope, fuel and afternoon heating can produce a local reversal that no regional station reports. The crew leader needs the wind at the break, not at the nearest weather station.

Potential use

The leader takes a reading with the impeller facing into the wind — speed, compass azimuth, temperature and humidity — and reads wet bulb and heat stress from the same screen. Readings are repeated at fixed intervals and logged onboard, so the trend is visible rather than remembered. The meter reports conditions at the point where the operator stands: it does not forecast, does not model fire behaviour and does not replace an incident meteorologist.

Decision support

That trend may inform whether the crew holds, widens the break or withdraws, and how long a work cycle is sustainable under the measured heat load, within the incident commander's procedures. Outcomes depend on reading discipline, terrain, fuel state and the crew's own trigger points.

Frequently Asked Questions

Selection, Use and Documentation

Answers to questions from fire services, rescue teams, civil-defence units and procurement officers. Confirm all commercial and technical terms with the supplier.

What does the HW-W01 measure?

Twelve parameters: wind speed, wind direction, air temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, compass azimuth, dew point, wet bulb, wind chill, heat stress, density altitude and altitude. The first six are measured directly; the rest are derived from those inputs and shown on the same 1.8-inch colour screen.

What wind range and accuracy does it offer?

Wind speed covers 0.3 to 60 m/s with ±3% accuracy, from calm forest air to storm-force gusts. Wind direction is read from an electronic compass as a 0–360° azimuth; the source material publishes no compass accuracy figure, so ask for it in writing if your procedure depends on it.

Is it waterproof enough for rain, spray and washdown?

Yes — the housing is rated IP67, meaning dust-tight and protected against water immersion, and the meter is rated to operate from −20 °C to +60 °C. The flip cover seals the impeller between readings. Note that the rating applies to the meter; no IP rating is published for the optional tripod or wind vane.

How long does the battery last, and how is it charged?

A 3.7 V rechargeable polymer lithium-ion battery supports ≥8 hours of continuous operation and charges over a Type-C connection with a charging indicator. Automatic power-off is adjustable from 1 to 60 minutes to conserve power between observations. The source states no battery capacity in Wh or mAh.

Does it record data, and can it be used as a fixed station?

It stores maximum and minimum values, average wind speed and measurement logs onboard, and built-in Bluetooth transfers them for reporting; the source publishes no log capacity. Handheld use needs no installation, while stationary use is available with the optional field kit — external wind vane, tripod and carry case — for a command post or fire camp.
