Earthquake and Building Collapse

Probes are threaded through rubble gaps and drilled rescue channels to confirm survivors visually, talk to them, and record the route for the rescue channel. The camera is inserted through an existing void — it does not image through intact concrete.

Example: Locating a Voice at the Bottom of a Service Shaft

Situation

A maintenance worker is reported missing in a service shaft of a partially collapsed plant room. Access is a narrow opening; the shaft is dark, dusty and roughly 12 m deep, and the rescue team cannot see the bottom from the rim.

Potential use

A crew could lower the rotating probe on the 25 m cable, watching the deployed-length readout to track depth, then pan and tilt to sweep the shaft walls and floor. With the headphones on, the operator listens for breathing or movement and, if the worker responds, holds a two-way conversation while the shaft entry is prepared. Recording starts on a long press so the descent and the contact are kept for the debrief.

Can it see or hear through solid walls?

No. An audio/video search camera is inserted through an existing gap, borehole, pipe, well or drilled rescue channel — it does not image through intact concrete. Once the probe reaches the void it provides live video and two-way voice. For true through-wall detection the manufacturer recommends pairing it with a radar life detector.

How deep and how far can the probe reach?
